Who is Tishna Films?

Tishna (تشنہ) in Urdu means “to desire the one you long for” and was founder Shuja Uddin’s grandfather’s poetry moniker, Tishna Barelvi. Tishna’s poetry embodied the ethos of the global citizen and Tishna Films is committed to storytelling that discovers the humanity of each and every story.

  • Shuja Uddin (Founder+Producer)

    Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, Shuja Uddin is a screenwriter, producer and the founder of Tishna Films. Graduated with an MFA in Screenwriting from Boston University, Shuja brings a diverse range of media experience for Texas-based creative non-profits such as Austin Film Society, Indiememe Film Festival and City of Austin’s Asian American Resource Center.

    Shuja has written projects for international media entities such as P&G, FIFA, Tencent Games and the Times of India. Shuja’s short film “Article 370” received an Honorable Mention at the Prague International Indie Film Quarterly Festival 2021 edition for Best Screenwriter.

    Currently, Shuja is a professor at Austin Community College and also runs Austin-based private school Headwaters School’s Film Department.

  • Devon Foster (Director)

    Raised traveling between disparate homes in Hawaii and Texas, Devon draws upon her mixed heritage - finding inspiration to tell both narrative and documentary stories. Her 2019 short film, about ecological threats, was screened during SXSW and awarded Best Short Film by the Rainforest Partnership.

    Across hundreds of small towns in Texas, she interviewed rural communities for documentary television. In partnership with the Department of Agriculture, she bought a platform to underrepresented farmers and traditional craft makers.

    Devon studied filmmaking as an undergraduate at Texas State University, where she received her BS in Digital Media Production. In her personal work, She is unearthing stories of great women that overcome adversity - from women’s health activists to breast cancer survivors.

  • Matt Rifley (Cinematographer)

    Matt is a cinematographer, television show creator, and visual story lover who currently lives in Austin, Texas, but grew up in the shadows of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

    After spending 20 years in the military, Matt (a Disabled Veteran from his time in service) immediately returned to his childhood dream of creating stories for people to enjoy by pursuing degrees in Radio/Film/Television and Digital Media Production.

    Since becoming a filmmaker, Matt has become a 1st generation Amazon Studios filmmaker, created several award-winning independent films, launched an annual film festival in Austin and co-created a weekly television show called TEXAS AGRICULTURE MATTERS (on RFDtv & The Cowboy Channel) that spotlights the world of Texas agriculture & Texas artists and makers that are part of the Go Texan Program (that show is now in Season 9). An avid Texas historian, few people know Texas the way he does.
